Perhaps you thought that if you said a few things in class, you'd do okay for class participation in Creative Writing.
Read on to find out what Ms. K's expectations are for this class.
Class participation is more than just raising your hand.
Class participation means showing that you care about Creative Writing class. Here are some of the ways that you can show that you care:
Class Preparation:
Show that you care by coming to class on time. "Tardies" cause you to lose points on your class participation grade.
Show you care by bringing your books and the other items that you need for class, like writing utensils, notebooks, and handouts. Being prepared for class will help you to get a good grade on "class participation."
Notes:
Whatever is written on the board or discussed in class is considered important enough to put in your notes. So, if we talk about it in class or if it's on the board, record it! :-)
Recording notes during class discussion is a good way to remember important information.
Homework:
Hand homework in on time.
If you're absent the day that an assignment is due, send it in with a peer or else hand it in by 8:00 am the day you return to school. If Ms. K is not in the room, then slip it under her classroom door.
She likes to find papers slipped under her door.
It makes her smile.
It shows that you care.
Handling absences well:
If you are absent, bring your re-admit slip (you know: the orange slip of paper that the office fills out) to Ms. K the very next day.
Tell Ms. K. ahead of time if you know you will be absent. This includes religious holidays.
Since we have a block schedule, you must check with Ms. K about missed class work on the day you return to school. Do not wait until the class meets to find out what you missed. Making sure that you see her about missed work on the day that you return to school shows that you care.
Talk to other students about what you missed. Be sure to record class notes that you missed and to make up any assignments.
Ms. K's hours:
Ms. K wants to help you to understand literature and to become better a better writer. Most days, she is available before school, at break, during lunch, and after school. If you're stuggling, come see her! Even if you're not struggling, stop by and say, "Hi!"
Helpful tips:
When you make an appointment to meet with Ms. K, write her a reminder note on a large piece of paper with your name, date, and the time we are scheduled to meet.
Ms. K is getting old and forgetful.
She needs reminders. :-)
Class discussion:
Class discussion is a key element in Creative Writing Class. We will be sharing our writing, and creating a community of writers who share and comment on each others work.
Don't be shy. We need each other to bounce our ideas off of and to be inspired. I am inspired by your work; let's work together to improve our writing.
